106年7月8日,中華清淨學佛協會舉行《地藏菩薩本願經》佛學講座,恭請授法老師段貞夙居士為大眾開講。本次第八講,進入分身集會品第二。

On July 8, 2017, Association of Pure Buddhist (APB) held Dharma Lecture of “Sutra of the Original Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva” and invited our teacher Susan Duan to give a speech. The Lecture Eight entered upon "Chapter Two: The Assembly of the Emanations".

透過老師細膩的帶領,我們不僅看到釋迦牟尼佛及地藏菩薩分身度生的慈悲及願力,更是看到當年在六道輪轉中流浪受苦,如今已獲果證、同來忉利天宮法會的菩薩眾們,絲毫不居功,而是將自身得度的原因,謙虛感恩地盡歸地藏菩薩的「廣大慈悲,深誓願故」。這份知恩不忘,並且仍不斷精進聞法(「共持香華,來供養佛」),實在對比出我們凡夫的愚癡傲慢(我們多數是認為自己的成功是來自自己的努力,自己的失敗都是別人害的。),使我們以此檢視自心並且明白學習的方向。

Through the Teacher’s subtle guidance, we not only learned the kindness and compassion and the power of vows of Sakyamuni Buddha and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva to transform into emanations to guide sentient beings across to liberation but also learned that Bodhisattvas who had been wandering in samsara of the six realms and undergoing suffering but now have realized attainments. All of them came and assembled for the Dharma Assembly in the palace of the Trayastrimsa Heaven. The Bodhisattvas didn’t take any credit for their attainments but modestly credited the cause of their liberation to “the great kindness and compassion and profound vows” of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva in full gratitude. In contrast to such behaviors of bearing in mind the favours Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva have done for them and diligently learning the dharma without a break ("all came holding incense and flowers to make offerings to the Buddha"), we human beings are so foolish and arrogant (most of us think that our successes come from our own efforts, but our failures all attribute to others). By learning this, we are able to reflect our mind and realize the direction of our learning.

此外,在闡釋經文的過程中,老師隨順我們平時生活或修行中的盲點,關鍵地指出「為何我們每每發大願,卻又頻頻輕易地做出毀願的行為?」

Moreover, in the process of interpreting the contents of the Sutra, in accordance with our blind spots in our daily lives or the Dharma practicing, the Teacher pointed out that “Why do we make great wishes over and over again but frequently and easily break them?”

若以英文字來看,我們發願的「願」是“WISH”,但從第二品裡我們看到「深誓願」一詞,便可明白佛經上說的「願」其實是“VOW”。前者心態上是想望、盼望。後者心態上是誓言、承諾。二者乍看彷彿相似,但最後結果卻天壤之別。「盼望我能離苦得樂」,猶如「盼望我能環遊世界」一樣地輕浮,將僅止於口上說說就算了;然而「誓願我要求個明白、斷除煩惱,得到自在解脫」,則會引發後續以行填願的實踐,必達到離苦的自在。因為唯有實際去做,才能走到目的地,有因必有果,這也就是所謂的「初發心時成正覺,如是二心初心難。」只要你誓言、承諾要如何,你也一定會如何。二者出發點心態不同,導致後續力道與最終結果全然相反。

Looking for the words in English, it is clear that what we always do is “WISH”, but through the phrase--- “profound vows” in the Chapter Two of “Sutra of the Original Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva”, we can realize that what the Sutra talks about is “VOW.” The former mentality is hoping and looking forward to something, but the later mentality is faith and commitment.  The two look similar but will lead to totally different results. “I hope I can leave from suffering and gain happiness” is as frivolous as “I hope I can travel around the whole world” which is just lip service. However, “I take vows to seek enlightenment, eliminate all the worries and attain liberation and ease” will cause the follow-up practice of completing the vows with actual actions so that it must finally lead to being at ease. Because only by practical actions can we arrive at the destination. What goes around comes around, and it is so-called “At the very beginning of making vows to attain liberation and ease, it has been predestined for one to become Buddha. However, the former is more difficult than the latter. ”  As long as you take the vows and commit to do something, you must achieve the goal. Because the two are different from mentality of starting points so that it gives rise to completely different follow-up strength and results.

老師此番開示,破解了我們的重大盲點,也使我們得以避免錯誤的起點。老師特別叮囑我們要清楚分辨並以正確方式導正自心。

This guidance given by the Teacher eliminated our major blind spots and enabled us to avoid practicing from the wrong starting points. In addition, the Teacher particularly instructed us to distinguish what we made (vow or wish) clearly and correct our mind in the right way.

講座後,雖然眼看場地單位所定關場時間已近,但因為與會大眾提問十分踴躍,諸如:「在往生者耳邊念佛號與不在其耳邊念有何差別?」、「如果投生到沒有佛法的世界,如何成佛?」,更有人提到自己常耽心「發了誓願,萬一做不到怎麼辦?」老師為解眾人疑惑,以最精簡卻又直擊核心的善巧方式,逐一回答,立刻解開了大眾心中的疑惑。深深感謝老師即使在時間緊迫下,仍慈悲善巧地滿大眾提問求法的願,做為學生的我們皆發願珍惜遇到如此慈悲與智慧兼具的老師,學習正確又自在生活的方法!

 

After the Lecture, attendants raised their questions eagerly.  “What is the difference between chanting the Buddha’s holy name near and away from the ear of the deceased?”, “How to become a person with full awareness (the Buddha) if there is no Dharma in the world where we are born?”  Someone even mentioned that she usually worried about “What if she cannot keep to the vow after she made it? ”  Although the chamber was going to be closed soon, in order to resolve attendants’ questions, the Teacher answered one by one with the wisdom which was the most simplified but can directly solve the core problem.  Questions in the attendants’ hearts were solved immediately.    We were deeply thankful that even though being pressed for time, the Teacher still compassionately and skillfully taught and solved our questions.  As students, we all made vows to treasure the rare opportunity to find a Teacher with both compassion and wisdom to learn the correct and comfortable way of living!

Thank our Teacher for leading us to hold a Dharma Assembly of chanting  “Sutra of the Original Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva” at the APB study (near MRT Technology Building Station) on the original date of Lecture Nine (September 3, 2017) in order to enable us to practice what we have learned in the previous Dharma Lectures---to give the Dharma to sentient beings.

 

The registration is open with limited quota.  More information will be announced on the APB’s blog in the near future.

 

The Ninth Lecture will take place on November 12, 2017!
