To Students from the Teacher:

Association of Pure Buddhist (APB) held a Dharma Assembly of chanting three chapters of “Avatamsaka Sutra” to celebrate the 4th anniversary of Pure Classroom, the APB’s predecessor, and its own anniversary.

Thanks for the blessing from the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, the student who is neither a class leader nor bears the administrative responsibility of APB proactively took on the role of the representative for requesting Dharma from the Teacher (the leader of preparation before the Dharma Assembly). Chin-Chun, who was usually shy and quiet stood out to take the responsibility bravely and led her classmates to arrange the details of the Assembly carefully apart from the busy life, i.e. setup of Mandala, seats, rundown, etc. During the preparation, I heard that those students who not also encouraged and cooperated with one another but also used the way of thinking with the Dharma which they learned in the courses, when they encountered difficulties. And then, they shouldered the responsibility, stood in others’ shoes, overcame their inner obstacles and built up confidence. In my heart, I am moved and rejoice in what they have done. This is the Bodhimanda which enables students to cultivate their minds through undergoing things is what I always want to build up.

In the talk after the Sutra chanting, I referred to a key sentence --“making good use of our minds” in the “Pure Conduct Chapter”, it means that practice is continuously accumulating process of “Faith, Understanding, Practice and Realization”. During the process, our minds are definitely the core objects where we can observe and then practice because what we do and say in our daily lives are from our minds. A thought not only can make goodness, but also can lead us to badness. What we should use to chant the Buddha’s name are our minds. And what lead us to become the Buddha (fully-enlightened being) are also our minds. That’s why I always told my students to “keep an eye on our minds”. Only when we lead our lives according to the teachings from the Buddha and make the right resolve can we make ourselves freer, calmer and happier through what we do and say.

Today, on this holy day, I sincerely offer what we do in the Dharma Assembly to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha and make a wish that all sentient beings and us can have constant opportunities to learn from the Buddha and make a firm resolution until we are fully enlightened.” --- Teacher Susan Duan
